Working with learning styles
Every student is unique and learns in their own unique way, some students are visual, some tactile, and some are oral. Both pictures below are activities that we did for beginning measuring.
Each year we take a pumpkin and use it to introduce weighing, measuring, and counting. This is a tactile way to introduce different types of measurement to kids.
Some students learn better if they have to put it on paper. We not only did activities where kids measure with rulers, cubes, and string but we had them draw heights and widths so they have the chance to experience measurement in a way more conducive to their learning style.
Having many different learning styles in class means occasionally you need to do 2 or 3 different activities and at least 1 will connect with a child and allow them to comprehend the objective of the lesson. As we provide free education in America we need to realize that we will encounter challenges both for the teacher and student. A good teacher needs to work with those challenges and find a good fit for the student while providing a a supportive atmosphere.
